The neighborhood’s residential neighborhoods are mostly small homes and apartment complexes. There are a few high-rise buildings, but most are small homes. The homes and apartments are occupied by both renters and owners. The homes in Alamo Heights were constructed between 1940 and 1969. There are a few pawnshops and massage parlors, but only one bar.

Alamo Heights follows a Council-Manager form of government. The city charter, which was adopted in 1954, was amended in May 2011. The charter vests all city powers in the elective City Council. The council approves budgets, policies, and appoints the city’s highest officials.
